Most publications document a high prevalence of THR failure in patients with ON, especially when compared to other disorders. The present study evaluated 427 hybrid and 192 cemented THRs, including 203 in patient with ON and 300 with DJD. Results were determined by Harris Hip Scores, xray appearance and need for THR. Mean follow up was 12 years. Mean age was 46.5 for patients with ON and 63.9 for DJD. The combined prevalence of femoral and acetabular failure was 10.1% (41 of 406) in ON and 3.7% (22 of 600) in DJD. In ON 14.8% of femoral and 5.4% of acetabular components failed, compared to 5.7% and 1.7% respectively in DJD. Failure was also correlated with specific components in both conditions. Conclusion: The failure of cemented and non-cemented components is higher in patients with ON than DJD. However, the differences noted in this series are less than in previous reports and the outcome in ON appears more favorable. |
